Matthew Old, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a Professor, the Head and Neck Oncology Division Director, and the Medical Director of the Head and Neck Cancer Service Line in the Department of Otolaryngology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
Dr. Old graduated with honors from Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology and received his MD from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School. After finishing residency at the University of Michigan, Dr. Old completed the Cranial Base, Microvascular Reconstruction, and Head and Neck Surgery Fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.
In 2016, Dr. Old developed the “Head and Neck Microvascular Fellow Boot Camp”, an annual international course to educate fellows in head and neck microvascular surgery. The course successfully obtains educational grants that underwrite the entire event, allowing free registration for all participants. The American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) leadership has requested that this become the official course for the fellowship for the International Society, and Dr. Old has been named Chair of Education for the American Head and Neck Society Reconstructive Section. Dr. Old is also an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, specifically the Head and Neck Education Committee, which ensures members receive the best and most current training in head and neck oncology. Additionally, Dr. Old is a member of NASBS, NRG Head and Neck Surgical Committee, the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy (ASGCT), AAO, and ABO.
Dr. Old’s surgical and clinical expertise is in head and neck oncology, microvascular reconstruction, skin defect reconstruction, skull base surgery, robotic surgery, paragangliomas and carotid body tumors, and thyroid and parathyroid surgery. He has authored/co-authored eight book chapters on head and neck oncology and reconstruction and has more than 115 peer-reviewed publications.
