Professor
University of Mississippi Medical Center
Jackson, Mississippi
Doctor Gina D Jefferson is currently professor, chief of the Division of Head & Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Surgery and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & neck Surgery at the University of Mississippi. She completed training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Loma Linda University followed by subspecialty training in Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery and Microvascular Reconstruction at the University of Miami. It was during her years of medical training that Dr. Jefferson grew more acutely aware of the importance of giving back to future generations.
Dr. Jefferson’s clinical practice is dedicated to the care of patients with head and neck cancer. In this role, she provides surgical services including advanced reconstruction of major head and neck defects, robotic surgery, in addition to surgical resection of head and neck cancers. It is the challenge of surgically addressing complex defects encountered mainly after surgical extirpation of malignant lesions of the upper aerodigestive tract to restore patient form and function that is incredibly rewarding to her. Dr. Jefferson also enjoys the process of shepherding patients through a complex, difficult process of evaluation, treatment and education and ultimately survivorship.
Beyond patient care, Dr. Jefferson is passionate about medical student and resident physician education and training. This passion is fueled by the statistics of her specialty where less than one third of practicing Otolaryngologists are female and less than 5% are African American. Through engagement in various societies such as the American Head and Neck Society, the Society of University Otolaryngologists, the Barnes Society and her own university, Dr. Jefferson serves as mentor and sponsor for URM and female students and colleagues to ensure there is a support network developing and expanding to increase the diversity of the specialty she loves.
