Introduction: Physician wellness has received attention at academic centers and tertiary care institutions as burnout has reached unprecedented levels nationally. A significant portion of large academic institutions have internal wellness survey metrics. The Stanford WellMD programs have built a well-being model constructed of the core concepts of Culture of Wellness, Efficiency of Practice, and Personal Resilience. The faculty well-being programs has several input channels including annual wellness surveys, listening sessions, pulse needs assessments, wellness rounds and a Well Being director committee represented by all departments.
Methods: We utilized results from the 2020 Wellness survey for the school of medicine provided results across the school of medicine. We focused our Wellness and Psychological Safety model on self-valuation, and the culture of wellness. We also incorporated quality improvement the concepts surround psychological safety into this model. The objective of the Wellness and Psychological Safety Workshop is to improve the wellness of faculty in the department of Otolaryngology.
Results: We performed a pre-workshop assessment and a review of wellness listening and psychological survey data. Listening session performed where the following common themes were identified: clinical efficiency, teamwork climate, team building, and appreciation for expertise. Intervention consisted of 30 minute sessions at each division meeting dedicated to the topics identified. We focused self-valuation improvement on learning the art of self-compassion with a dedicated didactic session. Psychological safety education was based on the Stanford CREATEngagement faculty checklist that encourages these values: Collaborate, Respect, Equity, Assistance, Transparency. We will perform a post assessment evaluation to quantify the improvement.
Conclusion: In summary, the culture of wellness is quickly evolving, and academic departments should evaluate the internal surveys, perform a needs assessment and implement a model to improve physician wellness. Here we present a model that can address areas of improvement for Otolaryngology physician wellness.
