Background: This study aims to delineate specific rhinoplasty related outcomes that patients find important when considering undergoing rhinoplasty.
Study Type: Cross-sectional survey
Methods: Patients that underwent or were considering rhinoplasty completed an electronic survey. Descriptive analyses were performed.
Results: Of the 111 patients surveyed, 64% identified as female. Mean (SD) age was 34.0 (12.9) years (range: 18-66 years). Among respondents, 73% identified as Caucasian, 14.4% as Latino/Hispanic, 5.4% as Black/African American, 6.3% as Asian, and 4.5% as Arab. Respondents were largely from the Northeast (68.5%) and West (16.2%). Of the respondents, 20.2% had one prior rhinoplasty, 13.8% had >1, and 64.2% had none. 36.7% of patients sought a rhinoplasty solely for functional purposes, 16.5% for cosmetic only, and 46.8% for both functional and cosmetic purposes. Majority of patients chose ability to breathe through nose while awake (80%) and while asleep (74.3%) as important for their own nose. 60.6% of patients selected ‘Overall appearance of nose’. ‘Ability to breathe through nose while awake’ and ‘overall appearance of nose’ were most important, ranked 1st and 2nd, respectively. ‘Shape and size of nostrils’ and ‘Desire for noticeable change in appearance’ were least important at 10th and 11th, respectively.
Conclusion: Patient satisfaction and improvement in QOL are crucial for successful rhinoplasty. Understanding what factors patients emphasize when considering rhinoplasties is critical to assessing rhinoplasty outcomes. Comparing our results with studies assessing the perspectives of physicians and the general population regarding “the ideal nose”, is essential to developing a holistic rhinoplasty patient reported outcome measure.
