Objective: ABEA founder, Dr. Chevalier Jackson created his own database on foreign body injuries. Currently, given poor reporting of such injuries, a new smartphone app has been created for improving the pertinent data collection around the world.
Method: A novel smartphone app reporting mechanism and global injury database was established by the Global Injury Research Collaborative (GIRC, www.globalirc.org). This platform allows for efficient submission of needed FB photos with object dimensional information, and relevant initial and follow-up clinical data not captured elsewhere. A new version of iOS based “GIRC App” is available to medical professionals from the App Store and soon to be available Android version (GooglePlay). This allows for quick, anonymous, de-identified (HIPAA-compliant), secure electronic mechanism for reporting these injuries.
Results: Select case based examples of actual submitted cases will be briefly presented to demonstrate proof of concept.
Conclusion: The free “GIRC App” has been successful in documenting pediatric injury cases. All otolaryngologists who manage foreign bodies of the aerodigestive tract can contribute to this global research database.
