Avram H. Mack, M.D. is Chief of Psychiatry at Nemours Children's Healthcare in Delaware, providing clinical care and academic leadership. Over his experience at Georgetown, CHOP/Penn and Nemours he has been an active leader in the development of quality and safety in healthcare, both related to behavioral health issues and those related to the systems generally. General topics have included building entities to reduce diagnositc error or enterprise-wide handoff systems. He developed enterprise-wide curricula for UME and GME platforms as well. Within Behavioral Health programs his work has included the systematic methods of gathering information about adverse events and responses that are coordinated (both harms to patients and to staff). This work also has included championing and mentoring local projects and helping new large projects as well using safety and quality principles. This has included annual improvements in the degree of participation in QI among members of his department. One innovation has addressed Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) as general incidents with elevated risk due to behavioral, emotional or cognitive problems. Other areas of focus have included systematizing care for detoxification and assessments for aggression potential among others. Dr. Mack is also an addiction specialist, a forensic child psychiatrist, and has expertise in the history of medicine and psychiatry. He was a full professor of psychiatry at Georgetown and the University of Pennsylvania and will continue teaching in pediatrics and psychiatry for Jefferson trainees at Nemours. And at both Georgetownand at CHOP he had served as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist.
