Assistant Professor of Psychiatry
Virginia Commonwealth University
Richmond, Virginia
Dr. Melissa Bui is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, Division of Consult-Liaison Psychiatry. Dr. Bui is a clinician as well as a and translational researcher, and previously served as the Principal Investigator for a pilot study at Brigham and Women's Hospital bringing a proactive model of psychiatric consultation to the Medical Intensive Care Unit, a care environment with high acuity medical patients, high incidence of neuropsychiatric disease, and high utilization of healthcare resources. Dr. Bui is now continuing to build upon the foundation of that work at Virginia Commonwealth University, and has launched a model of proactive psychiatric consultation in the Medical Respiratory ICU at VCU Health System. This model will provide proactive psychiatric consultations for patients demonstrating delirium as evidenced by CAM-ICU scoring, and will evaluate the impact of such a model by evaluating hospital and ICU length of stay, frequency of assaults on nursing staff, and healthcare costs when compared with a usual care approach. It is her goal to not only establish a strong evidence base supporting the positive impact of proactive psychiatric consultation in the ICU setting, but also to use the unique clinical environment of the ICU to educate C-L fellows, residents and medical students about managing psychiatric conditions within the ICU, as well as learning how to launch new programs of proactive psychiatric consultation in a variety of clinical environments.
