Abstract: For many Consultation-Liaison psychiatrists whose training and early careers focus on clinical care, approaching scholarly and research activities can feel overwhelming. This highly interactive workshop will feature a panel of consultation-liaison psychiatrists with diverse research backgrounds discussing how to evolve a practical clinical question to a scholarly project. The workshop will seek to achieve the goal of identifying the importance of clinical curiosity as the root of applying empirical evidence to daily CL psychiatry practice. We will pose real-time, participant driven clinical questions to the panel utilizing polling technology and learn from experts about how to approach developing research, scholarly projects and scientific publication. We hope to promote the connection between two commonly viewed distinct fields – patient care and research- within CL psychiatry to promote integration, education, and transformation together.

Dr. Christopher Celano is the Associate Director of the Cardiac Psychiatry Research Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and his research focuses on the development and implementation of collaborative care and health behavior interventions. He has experience performing qualitative research to inform intervention development, proof-of-concept and randomized pilot trials to assess feasibility and acceptability of interventions, and larger randomized, controlled trials to examine the efficacy of behavioral interventions.

Dr. Priya Gopalan will discuss the creation of scholarly work as a clinician educator and administrator. She will discuss the process of dissemination as it relates to quality improvement projects, educational initiatives, and clinical care. She will provide a perspective as a academically active, non-funded clinician educator.

Dr. Hochang Benjamin Lee is the John Romano Professor and Chair of psychiatry at University of Rochester Medical Center. His research interests are: 1. Developing innovative models for delivery behavioral health service for medical and surgical patients. 2. Prevention of neuropsychiatric morbidity after major surgery among the elders. Dr. Lee has experience in developing research ideas, testing them, and disseminating them through publications. Dr. Lee is Editor-in Chief of Journal of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.

Dr. Tom McCoy is the Director of Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Quantitative Health where he works to generate real world evidence through secondary use of artifacts of routine care using diverse data types, computational methods, and clinical questions. He will bring the perspective of generating evidence from preexisting data to the discussion with the goal of demonstrating the breath of possible research activities.

Dr. Anne Gross is the Chief Medical Officer at Unity Center for Behavioral Health and has served in educational leadership positions at Oregon Health & Science University including the role of Consultation-Liaison Fellowship director. In her roles, she seeks to promote scholarly activities for trainees and early career psychiatrists. Dr. Gross will facilitate the discussion between participants and panelists.

Participants are encouraged to bring a clinical question to the workshop during which time we will engage the panelists areas of expertise to develop a Scholarly/Research project together
Recognize the potential of any clinical question to become a topic of scholarship
Apply diverse methodological approaches to address potential questions
