Dr. Hurd began her career, surprisingly, as an English Literature major with a BA and MA from Southern Methodist University. Dr. Hurd later went on to graduate from the Texas A & M Health Science Center College of Medicine. She completed an internship and residency in a combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry program at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center (Now known as Banner University Medical Center). Board Certified in three disciplines, (Internal Medicine, General Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine), Dr. Hurd practices all three at John Peter Smith Health Network. Taking care of patients with significant medical, psychiatric and substance use co-morbidities has been the focus of her current practice for over 13 years. She has also mentored and taught medical students, residents and junior faculty. Dr. Hurd has been the recipient of many local and state medical teaching awards, and has presented at regional, state, national and international conferences. Improving well-being and mentorship have been among her main goals as an academic physician. Dr. Hurd has been married for many years to her college sweetheart and has two adult human children, and 4 "furbabies". She has a passion for education on all fronts, as shown by her commitment to students, residents, her patients and her colleagues.
