Resident Physician
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University
Alexander Posell is a current PGY-3 in psychiatry at SUNY Downstate.
He left college in 1995 to pursue a career in music, starting a record label out of his San Francisco bedroom and becoming the first American to release a record in the dubstep genre. He also worked as a journalist and music editor for XLR8R Magazine before moving to London and New York, where he produced fashion shows for CK, Diesel and others. In 2007 Posell founded a sound design and commercial music production company called Ghost Note, Ltd.
In 2011 Mr. Posell returned to school, studying psychology at Occidental College and graduating Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude. He worked in the labs of Drs. Nancy Dess and Clinton Chapman, researching the effects of methylphenidate on novelty-seeking in rats, and of Dr. Anne Schell, examining electrodermal responses to potentially phobic stimuli. He then completed a post-baccalaureate program at the University of Southern California, subsequently attending USC’s School of Medicine, where he co-founded the Keck Human Rights Clinic and joined the BRAVE Study Group, developing behavioral interventions to decrease hospital length of stay by minimizing bedrest.
At SUNY, Dr. Posell is currently researching the psychiatric effects of hyperparathyroidism, is co-writing a book chapter on geriatric psychosis as part of Dr. Michael Reinhardt’s team, and is conducting forensic interviews with asylum applicants. Future interests include forensics, consult-liaison and interventional psychiatry. Dr. Posell still plays music and is currently studying jazz drumming. He has a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
