Dr. David J. Banayan is Assistant Professor and Director of Rush University's ACGME-Accredited Fellowship in consultation-liaison (CL) Psychiatry. He is also the previous Director of the Transplant Psychiatry Program, and initiated Rush University's first psychoanalytically-oriented psychodynamic and psychopharmacology small-group supervision programs. Dr. Banayan adopts a holistic approach to the care of patients who have inter-digitating psychiatric-neurological-surgical-general medical and psychological illnesses. He is a proponent of inter-professional integrated care and collaborative care. Other interests include examining the economic aspects of CL psychiatry and models in which such care is provided within hospitals. In 2020 Dr. Banayan was an invited guest on the John Williams' Radio Show on WGN and served on the Chicago Medical Society's Covid-19 Task Force, including as the Chair of the Subcommittee on Physician Wellness. In 2021, The National Kidney Foundation Invited Dr. Banayan to create educational content to help dieticians address dietary/lifestyle nonadherence in patients with renal disease/on dialysis, for the worldwide release of their Global Renal Nutrition Course for Dieticians.
