Alan Akira, MD is the founder of Mugen Psychiatry, a practice serving patients in the inpatient and long term care facility environments in and around Chicago, IL. His mission is to bridge the disparity in psychiatric care to community psychiatric settings with his passion and skills in clinical decision making, continuing education, entrepreneurship in medicine, systems based learning and practice, and healthcare management.
He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the Science and Technology Honors Program with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology. He completed medical school at the University of South Alabama, serving as class president, graduating as a Gold Humanism Scholar, and recipient of the Medical Alumni Association Leadership Award.
He completed his residency in Psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center. He served as the founding chief of Emergency Psychiatry and co-founding chief of Medical Student Education. His clinical work has been recognized as the recipient of the Rush Emergency Medicine Consultant of The Year in 2020. As an educator, he has been recognized as the recipient of the Aesculapius Award, presented by the graduating medical student class of 2021 to a member of the housestaff demonstrating excellence in clinical education. In the Fall of 2021, he was awarded "Resident Physician of the Year" by the Illinois Psychiatric Society, a branch of the American Psychiatric Association which recognizes a member of the IPS who best represents in the view of colleagues and teachers, the ideals of being a dedicated psychiatric trainee.
