Dr. Shivanekar is a faculty member in the University of Pittsburgh's department of psychiatry, division of Consultation-Liaison (CL) Psychiatry. Her clinical work is focused on inpatient CL psychiatric consultations, where she supervised CL psychiatry fellows, resident doctors training in psychiatry, family medicine and child psychiatry and also medical students from the University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine. Dr. Shivanekar serves as a medical director of the telepsychiatry arm of the CL Psychiatry service at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, through which CL psychiatry consultations are provided to five non-urban UPMC hospitals. Her clinical areas of interest include substance use disorders, mood disorders, suicidality, delirium and psychotherapy.
Additionally, Dr. Shivanekar collaborated with several researchers at the University of Pittsburgh in clinical studies which recruit subjects from the CL Psychiatry service. Current studies include a randomized controlled trial of a single dose IV ketamine to treat depression and suicidal ideation in patients admitted with a suicide attempt. Other areas of research interest and collaboration include DBS for alcohol use disorder, psilocybin for opioid use disorder and pain.
