Abstract: This skills course, sponsored by the Emergency Psychiatry SIG, will focus on key topics essential for practice in the Psychiatric Emergency Service. The topics covered will include patient assessment, with a focus on the provision of Trauma-informed Care. This will be followed by an in-depth discussion of the assessment and management of the suicidal patient. Assessment and management of the agitated and violent patient will also be discussed in detail. Substance use disorders and co-morbid substance use are common presentations in this patient population; another presentation will focus on the utility of drug screening and management of these patients. The final presentation will be a discussion of issues related to medical clearance, the definition of medical clearance and what constitutes medical clearance. Each presenter will provide ~20-25 minutes of prerecorded material to be reviewed by attendees in advance of the meeting. The in-person session will focus on case presentations, case discussions and a panel discussion. Each presenter will review the topic briefly (5-10 minutes) and then turn to the case presentations. Attendees will be encouraged to submit cases and discussion questions in advance, if possible. The goal will be to make the live session as interactive as possible and the audience response system will be used to full advantage.
