Substance abuse treatment must evolve if it is to meet the ever-changing face of addiction. Today we are confronted with a herculean task made that more difficult and complicated by things like the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread economic hardship, and a plethora of “new psychoactive substances.” This means that substance abuse professionals must not only stay abreast of recent research in the field but must also take accurate stock of the ways clients are changing. Those of us who have been in the field for many years find ourselves asking again and again, “What has changed?” and “Why is it so hard to get attachment with clients?” We believe that the answer to these questions has to do, in part, with the dislocating effects of digital culture. Simply, many of our clients are socially disconnected and suffer from a pervasive sense of meaninglessness. Depth Recovery takes a novel and radical approach to these issues. Not only do we utilize the recent findings of contemporary researchers (e.g., Marc Lewis and Bruce Alexander) but we also incorporate many of the practices and insights that informed the pioneers of the 12-step movement. We call this approach Depth Recovery because of the debt we owe to the analytic psychology of C.G. Jung. Analytic psychology affords many tools to help our clients understand and make meaning of their experience. Recovery is about so much more than getting sober. We have discovered that clients who understand how and why they became addicted can more easily weather the storms of early recovery. Jung wrote, “Meaning makes a great many things endurable—perhaps everything.” Please join us as we discuss how the program at Rockland Recovery Treatment Center is working to combat addiction in the digital age. We will explore the importance of looking backward to moving forward.
