Session Description: While the world endures some of the most difficult moments in history, the rise of counselor burnout and compassion fatigue is increasing. This presentation explores how the opioid epidemic and the current COVID-19 pandemic can impair the health and wellbeing of helpers. We will explore empirical evidence on the subject of compassion fatigue and burnout. The presentation will also work to identify the differences between these phenomena and discuss ways to overcome them. The mental health substance abuse field is in more demand than ever, and we need clinicians who can utilize coping skills to remain healthy through these trying times. We will review expert exhortation on how to implement healthier time management skills, how to identify compassion fatigue and burnout. We will discuss a set of easy-to-use methods through mindfulness as well as complete a demonstration of the techniques in real-time.
