Investigative Genealogy (IG") is an identity resolution technique that utilizes unknown crime scene DNA to identify an offender or unidentified human remains. This technique is relatively new in the law enforcement community and over the last three years, the FBI Investigative Genealogy Program has identified best practices for solving cases and protecting the technique. Since March 2018, the FBI has solved nearly 60 cases utilizing IG. This presentation will provide a basic understanding of the DNA technology behind IG, the framework of the IG process, the legal issues surrounding IG, and how IG can be utilized in crimes against children cases.
