While the Ethical Rules of Professional Responsibility are directed at the prosecutor, the rules are attached to all disciplines who investigate child abuse cases in court, i.e., the responding officers, detectives, forensic interviewers, medical providers, counselors, teachers, and ultimately, the prosecutor. This workshop will review the applicable rules and illustrate how they attach to different disciplines throughout the case investigation and presentation in Court.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will understand how the ABA ethical rules for prosecutors obligate the entire investigative team to the same set standard of rules.
Investigators will provide evidence of grooming in their police reports so that prosecutors can use the offender's grooming as corroborating evidence when screening cases for probable cause thereby increasing the number of cases that actually get filed in criminal court.
Participants will understand that despite how emotional child sexual abuse cases can be, prosecutors must be mindful of the ethical boundaries and repercussions of violating those boundaries.
