This workshop is presented by providers with the REACH team at Children’s Health and DCAC staff involved with their PSB-CBT (Problematic Sexual Behavior – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) program. The first part covers information about sexual development and behavior in children across their ages and stages. Each developmental stage will be explored, including common grooming behaviors that occur during sexual abuse. A developmental perspective will guide discussion about normative and concerning sexual behaviors during childhood. Case examples will be discussed and evaluated using interactive audience response. The medical examination will be reviewed according to the age of the child. The second part reviews basic strategies for responding to problematic sexual behaviors (PSB), risk factors for children engaging in these behaviors, and guidelines to determine if treatment would be beneficial. Case examples will be discussed and evaluated using interactive audience response. To better understand treatment services, the discussion will focus on DCAC’s response to and process of working with families referred for PSB. An in-depth look at the treatment intervention will include how the model works and what to expect out of treatment.
