This workshop is intended for forensic interviewers who want to learn how to communicate with children who do not speak or who are considered “non-verbal.” This training is founded on forensic interviewing best practices with considerations and adaptations to account for individuals who do not speak, use gestures or a communication device, or speak few words. Through this workshop, participants will have an increased understanding of verbal behavior and communication methods; increased knowledge of communication considerations when interviewing a child who does not speak; and learn reliable and legally defensible techniques that can be applied in interviews.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will have increased knowledge of common biases regarding communicating with children who do not speak.
Participants will have an increased understanding of verbal behavior and how people who do not speak communicate.
Participants will learn basic introductory skills of how to conduct a forensic interview in the most reliable, legally defensible manner with someone who does not speak.
