In this workshop, a criminologist (and former criminal investigator) and a criminal defense attorney (and former prosecutor) with over seventy years of combined experience will explain their perspectives and approaches to investigative interviews. The presentation aims to offer attendees a unique insight into these two different and competing perspectives; how to conduct a sound investigative interview and how the defense attempts to challenge and suppress the statements. Both presenters talk openly about what the interview process looks and feels like from their different roles in the justice system. They will discuss the general principles they apply, the benefit and risks, and what they seek to achieve in the short and long term.
Learning Objectives:
Greater awareness of the dynamics of Criminal Investigative Interviews.
The importance of formulating an interview strategy.
Consider how this could impact working practices and decision-making.
