Dr. Alexis Steinmetz was born and raised in Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a minor in Medical Anthropology. She obtained her medical degree from Loyola University Chicago and spent a year as a Clinical Research Fellow in Ghana and Rwanda with support from Loyola’s Institute of Public Health. As a senior urology resident at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in Rochester, New York, Dr. Steinmetz continues to develop her career in urologic oncology, academic global surgery, and health equity. She currently serves on the International Medicine Faculty Review Committee reviewing grant applications for university supported research abroad. In collaboration with the Department of General Surgery at URMC, she helped to create a longitudinal curriculum and mentorship program, UR Global Surgery, to inspire and facilitate engagement in global surgery among residents and medical students. Together with her co-resident, Dr. Kit Yuen, she established a monthly Urology Clinic through a local community center for individuals without health insurance. During her research year at URMC, Dr. Steinmetz worked in the Simulation Innovation Lab and helped to design a study investigating the role of the microbiome in bladder cancer. Dr. Steinmetz is applying for fellowship in Urologic Oncology. She spends most of her free time outdoors and training for marathons with the help of her Vizsla puppy, Pema.
