National Cancer Institute - Urologic Oncology Branch
My name is Nikhil Gopal. I am a first year clinical fellow in urologic oncology at the National Cancer Institute. My current research focuses on identifying MR-based qualitative and quantitative features to better characterize hereditary renal masses. I am also involved with multiple genitourinary clinical trials at different stages: pre-clinical investigation of novel combinations of chemotherapy with hyperthermia in pigs for potential application to NMIBC or as bladder sparing approach in MIBC; designing metabolic (C-13 hyperpolarized pyruvate) and functional (PET/MRI) image-based protocols in kidney/prostate and urothelial cancer, respectively; and compiling data from completed trials on advanced kidney cancer. After fellowship, I hope to practice in a setting that allows me to maintain a clinical practice while being able to design/run clinical trials in kidney or bladder cancer, with integration of image-based predictive markers into these trials.
