University of Michigan
My name is Efe Chantal Ghanney Simons and I am a urology fellow in Neurourology and Pelvic Reconstructive (NPR) Surgery at the University of Michigan. I am also pursuing a Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) at the University of Michigan. My reseach focuses on identifying barriers and facilitators to access to careers in medicine/surgery/urology for individuals who identify as Under-Represented in Medicine (URiM), from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds and/or who identify as first-generation learners by examining every step in the continuum from medical school, through urology training and finally to urology practice. Emphasizing methodological rigor in research approach, we employ both quantitative and qualitative research methods drawing from expertise across disciplines, with the intention of creating targeted
interventions that are data-driven.
Additionally, I have a longstanding interest in global surgery education with an emphasis on competency-based training of local providers to achieve independent practice and an emphasis on bi-directional learning between US-based and local healthcare providers. To further build on this expertise, I am a scholar in the University of Michigan’s Global Health Research Certificate Program.
When I am not working, I love spending time with my family and salsa dancing!
