Dr. Gustavo Franco Carvalhal, MD, PhD, Professor of Urology at the School pf Medicine, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, completed his medical training at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1991. He completed residencies of General Surgery and Urology in Hospital das Clínicas and Pontifícia Universidade Católica i Porto ALegre, Brazil, in 1995; In 1997 he defended his MsSci dissertation at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, where he worked in 1996 and 1997 in the Oncology Group. In 1998 he has completed a one-year research Fellow in Urologic Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine, under Prof. William Catalona. In 2001 he completed his PhD theses in Urology at eht University of São Paulo. Since 2000, he is a Professor of Urology at the Department of Surgery, at Pontifícia Universidade Católica in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He is also an active member of the Urology Service of Hospital Moinhos de Vento in Porto Alegre, and Institution affiliated to the International Program of the Johns Hopkins University. In 2009, he stayed at the Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago for three months to a Post-doctoral stage with Professor William Catalona in the Department of Urology, involved in clinical research. Dr. Carvalhal works mostly in Urologic Oncology and laparoscopic/Robotic Surgery, and is active both in clinical and basic urologic oncology research. He has close to to two-hundred publications in Portuguese and English, 50 of them indexed in Pubmed. He is currently the President of Escola Superior de Urologia, the branch of the Brazilian Urological Society (SBU) responsible for SBU's scientific publications, meetings and educational activities. He is an international member of the AUA and of the EAU.
