Dr. McConnell is the Chief Executive Officer Emeritus of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC., where he currently serves as the Gordon Haynes Professor of Urology and Residency Program Director. Following a career in academic clinical practice, research and education, he transitioned to health system and physician practice leadership in 2001 at UT Southwestern. In 2008, Dr. McConnell was recruited to be the first CEO of Wake Forest University’s combined medical school and health system. He has served on the American Urologic Association (AUA) Board of Directors, lead the first AUA guideline project (BPH), and is the recipient of the AUA’s Eugene Fuller Award and the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeon’s Barringer Medal for his contributions to the field of prostate disease. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine (Institute of Medicine).
