Danil V. Makarov, MD, MHS, is a urologist focused on caring for men with prostate cancer and a health services researcher interested in discovering and disseminating into practice the best evidence to improve the quality and cost of that care. Dr. Makarov is Attending Urological Surgeon at the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, Manhattan Campus, as well as Associate Professor of Urology at the New York University (NYU) Grossman School of Medicine where he also serves as Director of Surgical Research in the Department of Population Health. Dr. Makarov received his medical degree and completed his urology training at Johns Hopkins University and earned a Master's degree in Health Sciences at Yale University as a VA-Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar.
Dr. Makarov's research is focused on understanding and overcoming the barriers to implementation of guidelines. He is an advocate for increasing shared-decision making (SDM) between providers and patients. Dr. Makarov is the past-Chair of the AUA Data Committee. He co-chaired QIPS committees authoring white papers and convening a Quality Improvement Summit to implement SDM into clinical practice. Dr. Makarov's research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, US Department of Veterans Affairs, AHRQ, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. His work has been published in JAMA, JNCI, Health Affairs, and Implementation Science.
