Dr. James A. Brown currently serves as Medical Director at the University of Iowa's Department of Urology. He was the department's residency program director from 2010-2021. He completed residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He subsequently served as Major and chief of urology at David Grant USAF Medical Center, California from 1997-2001. Dr. Brown completed one year of minimally-invasive urologic oncology clinical fellowship training, spending 3 months at Thomas Jefferson University, Indiana University, Massachusetts General Hospital and Henry Ford Hospital. He served as Director of Urologic Oncology at the Medical College of Georgia from 2001-2009 before joing the Department of Urology at the University of Iowa.
Dr. Brown is the current president of the Society of Academic Urologists. He is Vice-chair for the Health Policy committee for the North Central Section of the AUA. He serves as Chair of the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinic's (UIHC) surgical peer review Ccommittee. He previously served as a board member of the University of Iowa Physicians, on the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine’s Executive Committee, and as a Carver College of Medicine Delegate to the UI Faculty Senate. He has served on the Society of Urologic Oncology Nominating Committee and American Urological Association Laparoscopic, Robotic and New Surgical Technology Committee. Dr Brown is the past president for the Iowa Urological Society and the Georgica Urological Association. Dr Brown is a graduate of the AUA Leadership program and the UIHC Executive Academy. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the AUA, the Society of Urologic Oncology and the Society of Government Service Urologists. He serves on the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Urology.
