Melissa Assel, MS, is a Research Biostatistician for 10 years in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She received her Master’s from Columbia University in New York. Her primary research interest in urology is to improve screening and early detection of prostate cancer through the development and validation of novel risk prediction models including clinical information, liquid biomarkers and genetics. She is also the primary biostatistician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Josie Robertson Surgery Center where her team evaluates processes and outcomes of surgical procedures with a short hospital stay. She has authored over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as the British Medical Journal, European Urology and Journal of Urology as well as book chapter on marker development. She is the Chief Statistician at Journal of Urology and a statistical editors at European Urology since 2016. She is committed to improving the statistical rigor and reporting of statistics in urology and the guideline “Guidelines for reporting of statistics for clinical research in urology” (Assel M., et al 2018) and "Guidelines for Reporting of Figures and Tables for Clinical Research in Urology" (Vickers A., Assel M., et al 2020) has been adopted by the leading urology journals (EU, JUROL, BJUI, Urology) and adapted for other specialty journals.
