Joel J. Heidelbaugh, MD, FAAFP, FACG, is a Clinical Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Urology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He graduated from the Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York in 1996 and completed his family medicine residency at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, in 1999. He is the Director of Medical Student Education and Clerkship director in the Department of Family Medicine.
Dr. Heidelbaugh's clinical and research interests include preventive men’s health and wellness, social determinants of men's health, the impact of the Affordable Care Act on men's health, prostate cancer screening guidelines, the role of testosterone in cardiometabolic syndrome, and primary care urology. He is the creator, editor, and co-author of the only evidence-based textbook on men’s health, Clinical Men’s Health: Evidence in Practice (Elsevier, 2008), and Primary Care Men's Health (Springer, 2016). Many of his publications center on the importance of the well male examination, the controversies of prostate cancer screening and testosterone replacement therapy, and erectile dysfunction. Dr. Heidelbaugh is the President-Elect of the American Society for Men's Health. He has authored over 70 manuscripts and book chapters in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks.
