Richard J. Szabo, MD is Chief Emeritus of the Department of Urology, Kaiser Permanente, Orange County and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Urology at University of California, Irvine. He graduated Stanford University School of Medicine and then did his General Surgery prerequisite at the Harvard 5th Surgical Service followed by completion of his residency in the Division of Urology at Stanford University.
Dr. Szabo is one of the early pioneers in Freehand Transperineal Prostate Biopsy, having personally performed over 350 transperineal prostate biopsies under local anesthesia without sedation or prophylactic antibiotics in the clinic setting. He has also published several studies in the Journal of Urology on post prostate biopsy sepsis, including: "Targeted Antimicrobial Prophylaxis Does Not Always Prevent Sepsis after Transrectal Prostate Biopsy" and two studies in the Journal of Endourology: "Free-Hand Transperineal Prostate Biopsy Under Local Anesthesia in the Office Without Antibiotic Prophylaxis: Experience with 304 Cases" and "Free-Hand Transperineal Prostate Biopsy Under Local Anesthesia: Review of the Literature".
