Mitchell C. Benson graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and pursued a career in Urology following residency in surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, He became Resident and Chief Resident in Urology at The Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Following his chief residency, he went to Johns Hopkins Hospital and University where he was a Research Fellow in Urologic Oncology from 1982-1984.
After fellowship, Dr. Benson returned to Columbia P&S. He was awarded the Herbert Irving Assistant Professor award and he was Assistant Professor of Urology from July 1988 - June 1991. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Urology, and in July 1995, Professor of Urology. In November 2003, he was named the Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Columbia University. In August 2005, he was named chairman of the Department of Urology. Dr. Benson resigned as chair in September 2013. He continues to care for patients at Columbia University and N.Y Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital.
He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Union College and awarded the Urology Prize from Columbia University. During residency, he was awarded 1st Prize at the NY Academy of Medicine Valentine Resident's Essay Contest. He won Prizes in clinical research from the AUA in 1987 and 1991. He is recognized for the discovery of PSA Density, the first description of the association between chromophobe RCC and Birt-Hogg Dube syndrome and the discovery of novel treatments for BCG refractory bladder cancer.
Dr. Benson's research has been supported by the T.J Martell Foundation and the NCI. He has participated in numerous pharmaceutical industry trials. He has published over 225 scientific articles and presented more than 200 papers at National and International Meetings.
