Dr. Emmanuel O. Abara graduated in 1976 from the University of Ibadan as a Gold medalist in Community health and received the Blair-Aitken Prize in Surgery. He completed General Surgery training at the Universities of Benin and Port Harcourt, and a Urology Residency at the University of Toronto, with Fellowship in General Urology, Urodynamics, and Pediatric urology. A Director at the Richmond Hill Urology Practice and Prostate Institute, works as a Consultant Urologist for Hearst; Smooth Rock Falls and Sensenbrenner Hospitals. He is an Associate Professor, NOSM University with a special interest in rural and global health and use of technology in health services e.g. telemedicine. Has served in many professional leadership capacities at the local and provincial levels, including serving as Secretary and Chair for Ontario Medical Association (OMA) District 5, the OMA Nominating and Audit Committees, and as delegate to OMA and CMA Councils. Currently serves on the CEPD/Faculty Development, and Education Advisory Board, Senate NOSM University. Has continued to serve as a reviewer and contributor to various medical journals. He is Chair, Teleurology Working Group, International Society for Telemedicine and e-Health (ISfTeH); Vice Chair, Digital Transformation Leadership-WG (ISfTeH); member, Operations Committee, Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH). Visiting Professor/Lecturer to several international institutions esp.in LMIC
Has received several awards and honours: CUA 1995 and 2001, Rotary Paul Harris Fellow x 3; the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and Certificate of Honour,2012; Volunteer of the Year Award for Richmond Hill,2012; a Life Achievement Award from CANPAD 2013; Ontario Medical Association (OMA) Life Membership 2014; NOSM/NOAMA Leadership Award 2016.. Married to Nkeiru and blessed with Erinma, Oge, Uko and Ori.
