Dr. Efstathiou is Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Director of the Genitourinary (GU) Division in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Clinical Co-Director of The Claire and John Bertucci Center for GU Cancers at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a recognized leader in the field of GU malignancies and Radiation Oncology. His research focuses on long-term outcomes following bladder-sparing chemoradiation for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and has helped inform NCCN, AUA/ASCO/ASTRO and ICUD-EAU bladder cancer clinical guidelines offering bladder-preserving therapy as a safe and effective alternative to cystectomy in selected patients. He is involved in clinical trial design within cooperative groups, serving as NRG Oncology Vice-Chair of the Genitourinary Steering Committee, Co-Chair for Comparative Effectiveness Subcommittee and Co-Chair of multiple NRG protocols, including Co-PI of NRG/SWOG 1806 phase III trial of concurrent chemoradiation +/- atezolizumab for MIBC. He is also active in technology assessment/comparative effectiveness of advanced/emerging radiation therapies for GU cancers, as well as global oncology outreach efforts. He holds leadership positions within cooperative groups (NRG), professional societies (ASTRO, ABR, ACRO), and the NCI where he serves as Co-Chair of the Bladder Cancer Task Force. Dr. Efstathiou holds a B.S. from Yale University, M.D. from HMS, D.Phil. from the University of Oxford, and completed his residency training in the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program.
