Gail S. Prins, Ph.D. is the Michael Reese Professor of Urology in the Departments of Urology, Pathology and Physiology, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She serves as Director of the University Andrology Laboratories and co-Director of the NIEHS-funded P30 Chicago Center on Health and Environment. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Medical Center in 1979 and completed her postdoctoral training at Northwestern University, Department of Urology in 1982. Dr. Prins is Past-President of the Society for Basic Urologic Research (SBUR) and the American Society of Andrology (ASA). She has maintained two active research programs since the 1980s. Her translational research on human sperm cryopreservation resulted in an optimized freezing system for donor and surgically retrieved patient samples. Her basic research program focuses on prostate gland development, prostate stem/progenitor cells, steroid receptors, hormonal carcinogenesis, BPH and endocrine disrupting chemicals. She has published 185 manuscripts and 25 book chapters on her research which has been NIH funded for > 30 years. Dr. Prins has received many awards including the Excellence in Urologic Research Award from the SBUR/SWIU (2009), the UIC Researcher of the Year Award (2011), the ASA Distinguished Andrologist Award (2014), the SBUR Distinguished Service Award (2019) and an AUA Presidential Citation Award (2020). She has served on the DoD Integration Panel for Prostate Cancer Research Program and multiple NIH Study Sections. She currently serves as Associate Editor of Endocrinology and the Journal of Clinical & Experimental Urology and is an active member of the AUA Research Advocacy Committee.
