Dr. Wiener completed his M.D. from Tulane University in New Orleans, urology residency at Duke University, and pediatric urology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. He has been on faculty at Duke since 1997 and is Professor of Urology & Pediatrics and Chief of Pediatric Urology (with a hiatus as Chief, Division of Urology at the University of Mississippi in his hometown in 2003-05.) He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Pediatrics and was recognized in 2023 by induction into the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons (a society of the leading 75 academic urologists in North America).
Dr. Wiener has authored over 170 publications and 30 chapters on a wide range of urologic and medical education topics. Much of his clinical research has centered on the urologic management of spina bifida. He has been the Principal Investigator at Duke for the CDC-sponsored National Spina Bifida Patient Registry since 2011 and Urologic Management to Preservation of Renal Function in Newborns and Young Children since 2015. He served on the Guidelines Panel for Men’s Health for the Spina Bifida Association in 2017-19 and has received multiple grants to develop educational videos promoting sexual health in people living with spina bifida.
Dr. Wiener has currently in his second term on the Board of Directors of the Spina Bifida Association (SBA). He serves on the EPIC Pediatric Urology Steering Board for pediatric urology. He has worked on the Examination Committee of the American Board of Urology to develop testing material since 2014 and is an examiner for their oral examinations.
