K.C. Balaji, MD, is a Professor and Chair of Urology at University of Florida, Jacksonville, Florida, USA. He is a urological oncologist and a physician scientist with a career long interest in basic and clinical research in prostate cancer. In addition, Dr Balaji is a pioneer in the field of robotic urological surgery and was first to publish on now commonly performed procedures such as robotic nephrectomy and totally intra-corporeal ileal conduit urinary diversion. Dr Balaji's laboratory has identified a novel tumor suppressor, Protein Kinase D1 (PrKD1), in prostate cancer and over the last two decades has dissected the PrKD1-centric signaling pathways in prostate cancer culminating in generation of a novel biomarker panel that could potentially distinguish indolent from aggressive prostate cancer. Moreover, his laboratory has generated a unique "Prorainbow" florescent labeled transgenic mouse models that could be used to study the pathologenesis of benign and malignant conditions of the prostate gland. He is also actively involved in several clinical trials. In addition, he is the Program Director of the Urology Residency Program and Advanced Clinical and Research Fellowship Program at University of Florida in Jacksonville, FL.
