Toby Chai, M.D. is the Richard K. Babayan Professor and Chair of Urology at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and the Chief of Urology at Boston Medical Center.
After receiving his M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Chai completed residency in urological surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He was awarded an AUA/AFUD Research scholarship for two years of bladder physiology research under mentorship of William D. Steers, M.D. and Jeremy Tuttle, Ph.D. He held the John D. Young Professor of Surgery (urology) at University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Vice Chair of Urology at Yale School of Medicine prior to assuming the Chair of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine and Chief of Urology at Boston Medical Center.
Dr. Chai's has received awards for his research, advocacy, and clinical contributions including 2005 SUFU Zimskind Award, 2013 AUA Victor Politano Award, 2015 Wendy U. and Thomas C. Naratil Pioneer Award for Women's Health Research at Yale, 2015 SUFU Distinguished Service Award, 2022 AUA Distinguished Service Award, and 2022 NAFC Rodney Appell Continence Care Champion Award.
An avid writer and editor, Chai has published more than 160 papers, reviews and medical texts.
