William J Catalona, M.D. introduced the PSA test detecting prostate cancer and for having helped developed and led national pivotal studies that gained FDA approval of the PSA test, "free" PSA test, and Prostate Health Index "PHI" test. He established and directed the largest single-institution prostate cancer-screening program in the United States, including 36,000 men and was Principal Investigator on a Prostate Cancer SPORE grant, including a large multi-institutional study of more than 6000 men on the germline genetics of conversion from active surveillance to active treatment.
A graduate of Yale Medical School, Dr. Catalona trained in surgery at the Yale, UCSF, and the NCI, and trained in urology at the Johns Hopkins. He was a was a faculty member of Washington University, serving as chief of urology.
Dr. Catalona is engaged in research in the genetics of prostate cancer. His multi-institutional research group has collected DNA samples and clinical data on thousands of men with prostate cancer that have revealed new regions in the human genome that might contain prostate cancer susceptibility genes and genes that control prostate cancer aggressiveness. He has received continuous funding from NIH and/or the Department of Defense for >30 years, serving as principal investigator or co-investigator on 20 grants from NIH and 2 from the Department of Defense.
Clinically, he specializes in prostate cancer surgery and is recognized as an expert in performing "nerve-sparing" radical prostatectomy, having performed more than 7,000 of these operations. He is author of > 644 articles in journals and books that have received 37,683 citations.
