Learning Objectives:

Identify widely available, validated tools for functional assessment of geriatric urology patients, and describe how this can be applied in daily clinical practice.
Discuss the role of urologic surgeons, geriatricians, and other urologic healthcare team members in addressing various need of geriatric urology patients and their families.
Explain the impact of systems and economic challenges and caregiver burden on urologic care and outcomes in older adult patients and identify ways to address and support these issues in clinical practice.
Summarize the available evidence where various treatment options may exist or where there may be controversy about some treatments in older adults.
Address questions in their own clinical practices as they relate to care of older adult urologic patients.

Continued growth of the older adult population means geriatric patients will continue to account for growing portions of most clinical urology practices. Enhanced appreciation and understanding of the principles of geriatric care are crucial for good clinical outcomes in this population. Advances in therapeutic options have made treatment of complex urologic conditions in older adults more feasible. Some of these conditions or treatments may be controversial depending on a patient's clinical condition, family wishes, goals of care and presence of other geriatric syndromes.
