Dr. David A McCarron, MD, who is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, was educated at Williams College (BA, Phi Beta Kappa, Highest Honors, Chemistry), University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Case Western Reserve University Hospital (Internal Medicine), Tufts-New England Medical Center (Nephrology Fellowship and Chief Resident in Medicine). In 1977, he accepted a nephrology position at OHSU, becoming Co-Head of the Division in 1985. At the time of his retirement in 2001, he and his lab staff were responsible for over $35 M in public and private grants to OHSU. Immediately following his OHSU retirement, he accepted an Adjunct Professorship in the Department of Nutrition at U.C. Davis, retiring in 2018.
A 1984 Science paper was the initial identification of a dietary pattern associated with lower BP which the first Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Trial was based upon. During his tenure there, a serious of publications defined the narrow range of sodium intake worlwide. He has published over 250 peer reviewed papers and invited editorials and book chapters as well over 400 abstracts for scientific meetings. In 2004, he received the International Award for Modern Nutrition for his contributions to the role of nutrition in human hypertension.
Dr. McCarron is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and the AHA Council for High Blood Pressure Research. He was a founding member of the Board of the American Society of Hypertension. Dr. McCarron is an immediate past member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Nutrition and Chair of its Medical/Nutrition Council. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists
