Prof. Barbara Schneeman is Emeritus Professor of Nutrition at University of California, Davis. From 2004-13 she served as the Director of the Office of Nutrition, Labeling, and Dietary Supplements at the Food and Drug Administration. In that position, she oversaw the development of policy and regulations for dietary supplements, labeling, food standards, infant formula, and medical foods and served as U.S delegate to two Codex committees (Food Labeling and Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses). Prior to 2004 she was a faculty member at UCD in the Food Science and Nutrition departments; she also served in several administrative roles, including Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Chair of the Department of Nutrition. Her education and training includes a B.S. degree in Food Science (UC Davis), Ph.D. in Nutrition (UC Berkeley), and NIH postdoctoral fellowship. Professional activities include Higher Education Coordinator for USAID, Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committees (including chair of the 2020 DGAC), the ILSI Board as a public trustee, as well as committees for National Academy of Sciences, USDA, Food and Agricultural Organization, and World Health Organization. Professional honors include awards from the Institute of Food Technology and ASN, Fellow of the American Society of Nutrition and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She is recognized for her work on dietary fiber, gastro-intestinal function, development and use of food-based dietary guidelines, and policy development in food and nutrition.
