Dr. Summer Wilmoth is an Assistant Professor of Research for the Department of Public Health at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). She received her Ph.D. in Translational Science in 2018 from UTSA, The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, and The University of Texas at Austin’s joint translational science doctoral program. Dr. Wilmoth has a broad academic background in community and public health, behavioral sciences, and natural sciences. Her expertise is in health promotion programming and chronic disease prevention and management (e.g., obesity, cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases) through lifestyle/behavioral modification among various populations in various settings. She is an expert in health program design, implementation, mixed methods evaluation, as well as leadership, team science, and community engagement. Additionally, she is trained in novel product development, technology transfer, and commercialization. Dr. Wilmoth’s ultimate research goal is to accelerate and ensure the movement of scientific knowledge, new discovery, and evidence-based programming into real-world application for the improvement of health and quality for life of individuals and populations.
As a member of the Hispanic community, Dr. Wilmoth’s research aims to address key public health concerns disproportionately effecting underserved Hispanic populations through providing innovative, culturally tailored, theory-driven, evidence-based health promotion programming focused on chronic disease prevention and management. Her expertise and over 10 years of research experience have enabled her to develop a well-supported succession of research programs for Hispanic Communities. Her investigative team’s current work, funded by the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas, aims to expand their Building a Healthy Temple Cancer Prevention Program to more faith communities in Bexar County and the Rio Grande Valley.
