Joshua W. Miller, PhD, is Professor and Chair of the Dept. of Nutritional Sciences at Rutgers University. Dr. Miller earned his B.A. in chemistry and psychology from Swarthmore College in 1986 and his Ph.D. in nutrition from Tufts University in 1993. After consecutive post-doctoral experiences at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging in Boston, MA, and in the Department of Pharmacology at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, he joined the faculty of the UC Davis School of Medicine in 1997. He was then recruited to Rutgers University in 2012 where he has served as Chair of Nutritional Sciences since 2013. His research focuses on the relationships among vitamins (folate, B12, B6, and D), homocysteine, and neurodegenerative diseases, age-related cognitive decline, and cancer. His research also focuses on interrelationships between genetic polymorphisms and folate/B12, as well as novel strategies for assessing B12 status and absorption including contributions to the development of a novel, multiple analyte measure of B12 status called “combined B12” or “cB12”, and pioneering work using 14C-labeled cyanocobalamin to assess bioavailability and turnover of B12 after oral ingestion. He also has extensive experience in the measurement of various biomarkers of B vitamin status in large-scale epidemiological studies. Currently, he is co-PI on an NIH-funded study of B12 status, cognitive decline, and incident dementia (AG059011 – PF Jacques, lead PI) and a subcontracted co-investigator on an NIH-funded intervention trial of vitamin D supplements to slow cognitive decline in older adults (AG051618 – J Olichney, PI). Currently, he is Associate Editor for the journal "Nutrition Reviews" and previously served as Chair of the Association of Nutrition Departments and Programs (ANDP) from 2017 to 2018.
