Dr. Carmen I. Moraru is Professor of Food Processing and Engineering, and Chair of the Department of Food Science at Cornell University. She received her B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Food Engineering from the University of Galati, Romania. After working in the food industry for two years and then as a faculty member for eight years in Romania, she joined the Department of Food Science at Rutgers University in 1999, first as a Postdoctoral Associate, and then as a Research Assistant Professor. She joined the Department of Food Science at Cornell in 2003. At Cornell, Dr. Moraru’s teaching and research program focuses on using engineering principles and novel processing methods to improve food quality, safety, and sustainability, with a focus on nonthermal and other novel food processing technologies, including UV and Pulsed Light treatment, High Pressure Processing, and membrane processing. She has authored numerous peer reviewed papers, book chapters and research abstracts, and is often invited to speak at professional meetings and conferences around the globe. She has won two teaching awards from Cornell University (2008, 2012), the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) Award in Dairy Foods Research (2013) and the IDFA Teaching Award in Dairy Manufacturing (2015). In 2019, she received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, Romania, and in 2020 she was elected as Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT).
