Paula A. Lopes is a lipid researcher whose career aims at identifying mechanism-based molecular targets for obesity therapeutic intervention using disease animal models (genetic and diet-induced), genomics and DNA-based approaches for lipid metabolism regulation and inflammation. The main focus stands on cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate adipose cell fate, extending our mechanistic evaluation of biological systems from cellular and tissue, to organism levels. The ultimate goal is to control gene expression and signaling networks involved in adipocytes (trans) differentiation and proliferation, based on genetic susceptibilities and cellular contexts, and to exploit novel therapeutic strategies to counteract obesity and associated metabolic complications.
