Marie Thoma, PhD, MHS is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Science in the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland. As a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist, her research focuses on methodologies for examining maternal and infant mortality, birth outcomes, and disparities in pregnancy and postpartum health at the popultion level. Dr. Thoma has been involved in several efforts to improve reproductive and maternal/infant health in the state of Maryland and nationally, including recent research partnering with the Maryland Health Care Commission on recommendations to improve infant mortality programs in the state and developing nationally-standardized and accredited training to improve the quality of birth certificate data. She earned a B.A. in Anthropology (Nutrition) from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Population, Family, and Reproductive Health and concurrent M.H.S in Biostatistics from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University
