Currently I’m a postdoctoral chemist with over a years’ worth of experience in lipidomic analyses of animal products. In addition, I have a masters in broiler and broiler breeder nutrition, and a PhD focusing on laying hen metabolism and physiology. Together this unique background enables me to conduct quality analytical chemistry while simultaneously understanding animal physiology and health. Upon entering federal service as a postdoctoral scientist, I faced the challenge of developing a method to quantify and determine the molecular speciation of sphingomyelins in bovine dairy. This was a challenge which was outside the bounds of my scientific training prior which was applied poultry nutrition and molecular biology. Not only was I able to successfully develop and publish this method; currently I am applying this method for other animal product matrices including eggs and various forms of meat. Meeting this challenge required me to adapt and to learn skillsets out my comfort zone, while simultaneously overcoming the challenge of moving to a new area and working during a pandemic.
