Dr. Rothkopf is an expert in Metabolic Medicine and serves as a Consultant for the Heart Transplant, Lung Transplant, Cardiac Surgery, CTICU and Wound Care Programs at RWJBH/Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. He has served as the Metabolic Medicine Consultant at numerous hospitals and has been a faculty member of several medical schools. He is currently a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Rutgers/NJMS.
Dr. Rothkopf earned his bachelor’s at Syracuse University and his MD at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in 1979. He completed Internal Medicine and Chief Residency at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS). He trained in Critical Care, Neurointensive Care, and Nutrition/Metabolism (all at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in NY). While at Columbia, he studied under Dr. John Kinney in the Surgical Metabolic Unit (SMU) and Dr. Eric Newsholme of the Kreb’s Biochemistry Laboratory at Oxford.
Dr. Rothkopf has participated in several important clinical research programs. He performed electron microscopy of ovarian mitochondria for the in-vitro fertilization program under Drs. Howard and Georgeanna Jones. He explored sterol metabolism in the laboratory of Dr. Gerald Salen. He was a member of the Columbia University research group on nutrition and the respiratory system, including the early use of omega-3 fatty acids. He was a co-investigator on the use of novel enteral nutrition formulations for intensive care unit patients. He participated in studies on human growth hormone for pulmonary cachexia and AIDS wasting syndrome.
