Dr. Djawed Bennouna completed a B.S in pharmaceutical sciences in 2008. After getting a Master’s degree in medicinal chemistry from the Faculty of Pharmacy of Angers (France), and a Master’s degree in metabolomics from the University of Toulouse (France), he moved to the Faculty of Medicine of Aix-Marseille for his PhD in biochemistry and metabolomics, completed in 2018. In 2019 he joined the Kopec research group, where he is working as a post-doctoral scientist. Dr. Djawed Bennouna has 7 years of LC-MS-based metabolomics experience. He worked on the impact of cystic fibrosis conditions on the Scedosporium apiospermum metabolome, for novel drug discovery. He also performed untageted metabolomics on the liver of young rats exposed in utero to Bisphenol A. He also has experience understanding the effect of the environment and genetics on the expression of health promoting molecules in Brassica napus seeds, where he used a multi-omics approach, combining metabolomics and transcriptomics at different tissue level, to understand how these modifications could affect the microbiome and other pathways related to obesity in mice. Currently, he is working on the impact of nutrition on breast cancer chemotherapy, where he is performing targeted and untargeted lipidomics in the brain to identify biomarkers that could help to understand how the chemotherapy induces brain damage, and how nutrition could help reduce brain inflammation – believed to be a primary cause of chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment. In 2020, he received a 2-year Pelotonia fellowship to continue this research.
